ATTEMPTS TO RESOLVE BLANK SCREEN -- WORKED, BUT DISPLAY/SCREEN SIZE WRONG Rebooted in SAFE mode, disabled display adapters Intel(R) G45/G43 Express Chipset. Monitor now displays, but does not use full 23' of leaving 2' blank left and right and 1' blank top and bottom. Would like to auto-scan for updated drivers, but device manager does NOT have a 'Monitors' list. It does show the Acer monitor or any other monitor anywhere else that I can find Tried device manager 'Scan for hardware changes' produces scan for plug & play devices -- finds nothing.

Control Panel only shows a 'Default Monitor' (e.g., Control Panel / Appearances and Personalization / Display / Screen Resolution, Display drop down only shows '1. (Default Monitor) on.' QUESTION: I don't know a lot about this hardware stuff. Any advise on best strategy: 1. Upgrade display adapters (if such a thing is done)?

Hi Linda and all, Good news: My issue is resolved, from help with Gateway telephone tech support. (FYI, Gateway provided good phone support. There was no wait to get a service rep, the rep was knowledgeable, and he didn't insist that I repeat the time-consuming steps I had already taken. The call was only 40 minutes, which I consider short given the number of reboots required to test things.) Here is the answer (and mud in my eye): I had both the VGA and HDMI cables connected, and this produced a conflict.

Somehow that had worked okay under Vista, but in Windows 7, the O/S just couldn't see the monitor at all. Let me recap, for the possible benefit of others sharing my problem.

PROBLEM RECAP: After upgrading from Windows Vista to Windows 7, my monitor was blank. The only was I could see anything was to power down, reboot in safe mode, disable the display adapters, and reboot again. Various attempts to upgrade the display adapaters (Win 7 latest, previous Vista versions, etc.) all failed. My setup happens to be a Gateway SX2800-1 (preinstalled with Vista) with an Acer H233H monitor. SOLUTION: Step 1: Re-enable your display adapters (if previously disabled). Step 2: Power down machine. Step 3: Connect ONLY the VGA cable OR the HDMI cable, but not both.
